Aarati (“Arthi”) Kasturirangan joined Bread & Roses as director of programs in January. Aarati is a longtime organizer, activist, educator, and researcher in movements for gender justice, racial justice, climate justice, and peace. She has a PhD in community psychology from the University of Illinois at Chicago. During her time in Chicago, Aarati cofounded the Chicago chapter of Incite! Women of Color Against Violence and coordinated the 2002 Color of Violence conference.
As director of programs, Aarati focuses on developing social change leaders, growing grantee capacity, and convening gatherings of changemakers. She moved to Philadelphia in 2013 and worked as program officer for integration and impact with the American Friends Service Committee. In addition, she cofounded 350 Philly, a local effort to build a movement for climate justice in Philadelphia. Aarati lives in South Philadelphia with her husband, Jonathan Lipman, and their two children, Asha, 6, and Eli, 4.
