Racial & Economic Justice Fund

The Racial & Economic Justice Fund is a core fund at Bread & Roses that moved $200,000 to groups engaged in direct-action community organizing in the Philadelphia region to promote racial and economic justice.

Abolitionist Law Center is a law firm dedicated to ending race and class-based discrimination in the criminal justice system.  

Asian Americans United empowers Asian Americans in Philadelphia to exercise leadership in their communities and come together to challenge oppression.

CAIR-Philadelphia‘s mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

Free Migration Project fights at the intersection of law and community organizing for freedom of movement for all people. They center impacted people in campaign work, and work toward productive collaboration with grassroots organizations through partnering with in their campaign work. 

Human Rights Coalition is working to dismantle the prison system by abolishing solitary confinement, shutting down toxic prisons, and fighting for the freedom of their loved ones. 

JUNTOS combines leadership development, community organizing, and collaboration with other community-based advocacy organizations to build power in Latinx immigrant communities. 

Movement of Immigrant Leaders in Pennsylvania is a network of families fighting for the dignity and rights of every Pennsylvanian, regardless of immigration status. They educate, organize and cultivate participation for social, political, and economic changes to ensure that human needs become human rights.

National Domestic Workers Alliance exists to build power, recognition, and respect for nannies, house cleaners, caregivers, and other domestic workers in the Philadelphia region.

Philadelphia Coalition for Affordable Communities is a coalition of community, disability, faith, labor, urban agriculture, and community arts organizations that have joined together to pass laws that address the City’s housing and food affordability crises.

Philadelphia Teamsters for a Democratic Union is a worker-led, grassroots movement that organizes economic justice campaigns, develops grassroots leaders, and promotes community-labor alliances to improve workers’ rights. 

Philly Black Worker Project believes that collective action can bring change to low road industries and shift power from employers to Black workers. They contribute to the existing worker organizing landscape by focusing on non-traditional, Black workers in the “temp” industry.

Philly Palestine Coalition’s organizing mission is to amplify the demands of Palestinians living under brutal occupation, apartheid, and now genocide. Through the leadership of Palestinians in the occupied territories and those in the diaspora, they make the issue of Palestine a local issue because it is U.S. tax dollars funding this oppression. Palestine is also a local issue because the same systems oppressing Palestine are those that oppress Black, brown, indigenous, poor, queer, and marginalized people globally.

Philly Thrive works to build a world where we can all breathe and thrive. For them, that means creating a world free of toxic air pollution and polluting oil refineries, particularly in South Philly neighborhoods.

Poor People’s Economic Human Rights Campaign‘s mission is to unite the poor across color lines as the leadership base for a broad movement to abolish poverty and build a cooperative society that ensures economic, social, and cultural rights. 

Restaurant Opportunities Center United – Pennsylvania is a membership-led organization with a mission to improve restaurant workers’ lives by building worker power and uniting workers of various backgrounds around shared goals and values. ROC-PA is the only Pennsylvania organization that combines worker advocacy, workplace justice campaigns, job training, and participatory research to build power for low-wage restaurant workers.

Urban Creators‘ mission is to nurture resilience and self-determination in North Philadelphia by building and maintaining land and food sovereignty.

UrbEd is a student-led organization that advocates for a stronger urban education system. They work to improve education with a focus on issues that impact economically disadvantaged students and students of color.

Why Not Prosper responds to the needs of women in the prison system and supports women’s re-entry journey from prison to their community. This grant will support Why Not Prosper’s Women’s Advocacy program in its fight for quick access to Medicaid and doctor’s appointments for returning women.

Woori Center’s mission is to organize Korean and Asian Americans to achieve social, racial, and economic justice, particularly in areas like immigration reform and access to healthcare.

Youth Art & Self-empowerment Projectempowers young people who are or have been incarcerated in adult jails and prisons through artistic expression, political education, and leadership development.

Gender Justice Organizing Fund

The Gender Justice Organizing Fund is an annual fund at Bread & Roses that moved $140,000 to grassroots groups organizing to mobilize women, girls, transgender, and gender-nonconforming people to make change.

ACT UP Philadelphia is a diverse, nonpartisan group of individuals united in anger to end the AIDS crisis using direct action.  

Ark of Safety LGBTQ+ Safe Haven is a faith-based initiative providing inclusive and gender-affirming emergency housing for LGBTQIA+ people facing housing insecurity in the Philadelphia region.

Coalition for Restaurant Safety & Health is a group of hospitality & food service workers, survivors, and allies who organize to achieve safer, harassment-free work cultures within their communities.

Colectiva Feminista Comadre Luna’s mission is to cultivate safe spaces of collective care among immigrant Latinx women of mixed-status to awake inner strengths, and challenge the systematic oppression that generates trauma in the body.

Girls Justice League is a girl’s rights organization dedicated to taking action for social, educational, and economic justice for girls, young women, and those who identify as female in the Philadelphia region.

Hearts on a Wire is a Philadelphia-based collective of transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) people building a movement for gender self-determination, racial and economic justice, and an end to the policing and imprisonment of TGNC communities.

Philadelphia Community Bail Fund’s mission is to end cash bail and pretrial detention in Philadelphia. 

Purple House Project PA‘s mission is to strengthen, empower, and transition women impacted by intimate partner violence via connection to essential resources that aid in the healing process. 

Women’s Community Revitalization Project is committed to social and economic equity for low-income women and their families. 

Why Not Prosper advocates for the just treatment of incarcerated women and promotes activities that support these vulnerable women upon their release from prison.

Future Fund

The Future Fund is a core fund at Bread & Roses that moved $50,000 to organizations working on emerging issues or developing new approaches to social justice activism.

Agape African Senior Center‘s mission and long-term vision of social justice is to empower Diaspora Elderly, especially those challenged linguistically, socially, culturally, and economically, and their families to independently access programs, resources, and services to which they are entitled and for which they may be qualified. 

Germantown Residents for Economic Alternatives Together uses collective resources to grow food, share tools, support each other in times of need, organize around issues of housing justice, and strengthen the community’s holistic health and well-being.

Indigenous Education is dedicated to advancing social justice through its mission of educating the public about the omitted history of brown to dark-skinned Indigenous Peoples of the Americas, particularly from the Southeastern United States. 

Indigenous Peoples’ Day Phillycultivates an active Indigenous presence in Philadelphia through cultural, educational, and community-building initiatives that uplift Indigenous traditions, creative economies, and histories. 

Kiths Integrated and Targeted Human Services’ mission is to create opportunities for self-sufficiency within immigrant and refugee communities. They provide shared resources, advocate for social justice, and support the growth and independence of immigrants and refugees. 

Neighborhood Land Power Project is focused on building a neighborhood-rooted food and land system in West Philadelphia through community leadership development and land-based strategies. 

Ollin Yoliztli Calmecac’s mission is to advocate for the rights of indigenous peoples, claim space for indigenous cultural practices in Philadelphia, and provide a venue for all indigenous peoples to investigate, understand, and raise awareness about their ancestral roots. 

Safe Haven Family Life Center‘s mission is to support the Strawberry Mansion community and build a base of people from the community who are prepared to learn, grow, and advocate for others with the goal of changing systems to benefit the community.

Students for the Preservation of Chinatown oppose the arena and fight for Chinatown’s survival while working to sustain Chinatown, a community that has historically been undervalued by developers and local city government as a cultural treasure.  

Vietgroup Empowers advocates for the Vietnamese American community in Philadelphia through uplifting initiatives promoting equity and justice. Their mission centers on empowerment through education, advocacy, and community building. Vietgroup Empowers works to increase opportunities for Vietnamese Americans to reach their full potential. 

Phoebus Criminal Justice Initiative

The Phoebus Criminal Justice Initiative is a core fund at Bread & Roses that moved $60,000 to groups organizing to address the root causes of the crises within the criminal legal system. The money for these grants comes from a partnership with the Phoebus Fund family foundation.

Amistad Law Project organizes and litigates for the human rights of incarcerated people and their families and believes in building intersectional movements against systemic oppression.

Coalition to Abolish Death by Incarceration seeks to end life without parole sentences in Pennsylvania by centering people who have been directly impacted by crime and long-term incarceration.

DayOneNotDayTwo is an intergenerational social justice movement with a mission to heal through creative expression and build power through narrative.

Healing Communities PA trains faith community members to build community organizing skills while acting as a bridge between the faith community, the criminal justice community, and directly impacted people.

Movement of Immigrant Leaders in Pennsylvania is a network of families across Pennsylvania working to build power among immigrant communities to disrupt the current criminal legal system and challenge its treatment of undocumented immigrants.   

Pardon Project Steering Committee‘s mission is to end the discrimination against people who have lived experience in the criminal justice system.  

Prison Health News works to abolish prisons, end HIV, hepatitis C, COVID-19, and other diseases fueled by systemic injustice while building a base of healthcare organizers among people in prison.   

Reuniting Family Bail Fund’smission is to be the premier trusted resource for advocacy, social change, and reform of the criminal legal system in Montgomery County, PA.

Womxn Beyond Borders’ mission is to prevent and eliminate domestic violence among womxn by elevating, educating, and empowering them with crisis interventions, compassion, and humanitarian resources.

West Philadelphia Community Fund: Community Organizing  

The West Philadelphia Community Fund was a one-time fund that made $500,000 in grants to movement organizations in the West Philadelphia community—particularly in and around the 52nd Street Corridor.

Amistad Law Projectorganizes and litigates for the human rights of incarcerated people and their families and believes in building intersectional movements against systemic oppression. 

Centennial Parkside CDC’s mission is to preserve, promote and revitalize East Parkside through partnerships with resident-led organizations, local businesses, and institutions and to deliver programs that engage residents, increase opportunity, and grow a diverse, thriving community. 

Coalition to Abolish Death by Incarceration seeks to end life without parole sentences in Pennsylvania by centering people who have been directly impacted by crime and long-term incarceration. 

DecolonizePhilly  is an environmental justice organization based in West Philadelphia that curates spaces for changemakers to come together and take a stand on environmental injustices in their community.  

Do Moore Good serves to empower marginalized communities to achieve their full potential and is partnering with Philadelphia Lawyers for Social Equity to expand their statewide pardon hub network into West Philadelphia.

Lift Every Voice Philly is a Black-led, multi-racial organization building parent power to transform Philadelphia schools by advancing racial, economic, and education justice.

W.E.B. Du Bois Movement School for Abolition & Reconstruction teaches aspiring organizers how to understand the world and how to change it, shifting prevailing narratives around policing and mass incarceration by building the capacity of individuals and movements in West Philadelphia and across the city. 

Youth Empowerment for Advancement Hangout is a Black-led, community-based organization working with teens and young adults ages 15 to 24 who are directly impacted by violence and living in West and Southwest Philadelphia. Through peer led mediation and conflict resolution, teen led interventions, and economic opportunities, YEAH helps young people get the lives they want and deserve. 

West Philadelphia Community Fund: Mental Health & Wellness  

Beyond the Bars is a student-driven and community-based music and resource connection program that is dedicated to interrupting the cycles of violence and divestment while helping students recognize their immense potential and bright futures.

Black Lives Matter Philly is a Black radical organization that seeks to eliminate all oppressive systems and forms of violence against Black people. 

Blackwell Culture Alliance, Inc.’s mission is to inspire hope and spread love to help contribute to creating a better quality of life for residents of West Philadelphia by helping to build stronger communities, neighborhoods, and economies through education, volunteerism, and community outreach programs. 

DACO Collective, or the Diasporic Alliance for Cannabis Opportunities, is dedicated to advancing social justice through a multifaceted approach. Our mission centers on education, wellness, and economic empowerment, with a specific focus on diaspora communities within the cannabis industry. 

Double Trellis Food Initiative’s mission is to serve as an immediate stopgap for the most food-insecure individuals in marginalized communities of Philadelphia in a way that is both culturally relevant and grounded in human dignity, while also working to directly address some of the root causes of food insecurity through our workforce development program, culinary workshops, and food justice advocacy work.  

Family Survival’s mission is to offer community charitable activities throughout the Philadelphia community and Pennsylvania area, helping families and individuals secure food, clothing, shelter, and information.  

Forbidden Fruit is an arts organization that curates and produces transformative immersive experiences around art & wellness with a mission to inspire and uplift artists and art lovers with accessible, high-quality activations. 

One Art Community Center provides inspirational experiences and a safe space for marginalized communities in Philadelphia to connect, heal, learn and incubate projects through arts, culture, and educational programming and events.  

The Painted Bride is committed to supporting artists from all walks of life; amplifying underrepresented voices to foster diversity and inclusivity, and showcasing work that is relevant to current social issues. The Bride creates safe spaces for people from diverse backgrounds to come together to explore the human experience, share in the joys and sorrows artists’ works present, and engage in thoughtful conversation.  

Spirits Up! is a social impact organization prioritizing the empowerment of at-risk communities by offering engagement through personal and collective self-soothing methods, such as mindfulness and art, and restorative movement-based practices. 

Striving Together Empowering People CDC‘s mission is to enrich the lives of residents and West Philadelphia neighbors by providing educational opportunities to our Belmont community through engaging, holistic services.  

The Elevation Project’s mission is to meet the needs of at-risk and formerly incarcerated individuals by providing holistic services in a safe and supportive environment to empower fresh starts and open new pathways. 

The Haven Healing Hut believes that a sick mind or body is incapable of fighting for social justice, and their mission is to attack these imbalances with a vengeance, using those tools that have been handed down by ancestors, religious beliefs, spirituality, and faith. 

The People’s Fridge is driven by a dual mission deeply rooted in environmental sustainability and social justice, with a long-term vision for community empowerment. 

Women’s Institute for Family Health‘s mission is to provide health and outreach services to eliminate racial and ethnic health disparities, particularly among African Americans. They challenge power systems that have contributed to the systemic racism that has impacted the health outcomes of marginalized people.
