Celebrating the Movement for Media Diversity
In 2006, we celebrated the achievements of a powerful group of local activists committed to expanding media democracy in Philadelphia by increasing the diversity of voices heard on the airwaves.
We presented the Paul Robeson Social Justice Award to the Philadelphia Community Access Coalition for its efforts over the past nine years to establish a public access cable television station in Philadelphia. The work of the coalition was reaching a crucial point as it negotiated with the City of Philadelphia to make public access cable TV a reality.
We also presented a posthumous award to Mattie Humphries (1919-2003) for her determination to bring public access to Philadelphia during an earlier stage of this struggle.
