About the Awardees
The Paul Robeson Social Justice Award
Bob Brand, President of Solutions for Progress, for his life’s work as an activist in support of absolute democracy. In addition to his current work supporting liberals and progressives in the electoral arena, Bob has been a health care activist, an organizer in the civil rights, anti-war and labor movements and an important voice in the movement for cultural democracy.
The Polly Brinley Outstanding Volunteerism Award
Inja Coates, Director of Media Tank, for her advocacy and work educating people about the importance of media democracy including media ownership, media literacy and access for everyone.
Community Empowerment Awards
Election 2003: Vote for Homes! coalition, convened by Project Home, for its voter education and registration program developed to engage homeless individuals in the electoral process.
Philadelphia Affordable Housing Coalition, a coalition of fifteen member organizations and their allies, for its successful combination of education programs and advocacy to push for legislation that will increase public funding to support the development of decent, affordable low-income housing.
